This thesis examined the necessary requirements for the sustenance of the integrity of assets in Trinidad and Tobago’s Energy Sector. This is important since its contribution to GDP in 2023 was 38%, making it the major revenue provider to the government. The purpose of this research was to mitigate, reduce or prevent the likelihood of major industrial accidents that could result in catastrophic assets or environmental damage, or fatalities. The approach was a mixed method study that reviewed AIM models and frameworks, derived from research work completed, those published by global oil and gas governance bodies and those implemented by international and national oil and gas corporations. Global and local AIMS were compared, investigating the critical success factors required for sustainable AIMS implementation and the impact on global governmental regulations. An online survey was conducted with a sample of 1000 people resulting in a response of 220 people. The findings of the survey identified the important elements and critical success factors for implementation and sustainability of the proposed AIM Framework. These elements were, then used to modify the conceptual framework, validated by semi structured interviews. The reliability and the validity of the measurement instrument were assessed and found to be very reliable and a good fit for the model. Triangulation of the findings from the survey and interviews produced a consistent result. A large gap in knowledge was identified both in the understanding of AIM, process safety and associated governmental regulation. The contribution of the research is to the body of knowledge via the benchmarking analysis of the AIM practices at the T&T energy-sector organizations against the peers in the global arena and the development of the proposed AIM Framework for possible adoption in T&T. Testing the proposed fit for purpose AIMS Framework with an even larger sample of energy sector companies and using the findings to develop a national Framework for AIMS for the energy sector might very well be the way forward.
